This video comprehension is all about the wonderful world of compost. Your students will learn what compost is and how it works, the importance of composting, as well as what we can and can’t compost. This pack contains 3 levels of differentiation as well as an extension activity where they must write a persuasive letter. What is video comprehension? Our video comprehension series is designed to facilitate the learning of those students who find reading tricky. It allows them to access the same level of learning without the need to read large amounts of information. We have found it especially helpful with our SEN students. Each set is differentiated three times. With the first level of differentiation requiring them to simply circle the correct answers. These worksheets work best if each student has their own device as they can re-watch parts of the video to find the correct answers. However if you don’t have one device per students or pair we have done this with great success by having the video on repeat on the board / tv at the front of the classroom. This camouflage worm activity is great to teach your students the importance of camouflage in nature. It’s a very simple yet effective activity that clearly shows how animals are colored to suite their environment. Teaching Guide: Before the lesson cut lots of different colored wool into 10cm lengths. Hide the wool around your outdoor space. Discuss what the word camouflage means and explain that they are going to look into what it is and why it’s important. Tell the students that for the next 15 minutes (approx.) they are going to be birds on the hunt for some yummy woollen worms! Let them go outside and hunt as many of the woollen strips as possible. Once you’re back in the class get the students to discuss what they discovered when trying to find the wool. Which colors were hard to find? What can this tell us about the color of animals which may live in that area? If appropriate, get students to complete the question sheet to encourage them to think about what camouflage is and why it’s so important in nature. These challenges are a great addition to your light and shadow unit. They will get your students exploring shadows in a fun and practical way as they attempt to complete each of the challenges on the cards. These challenges encourage self-discovery and independent thinking as well as teaching them how shadows are created and the influence that the angle of light has on the shadow. This activity works best on a sunny day first thing in the morning when the sun is lower in the sky so that the shadows are larger. These cards contain a main challenge as well as some having an extension to the task (written in purple) for more of a challenge. Cards 1 - 10 are more simple activities. Cards 10 - 20 are more complex. Some of these cards work much better when students are working in a small group. For the cards where students are required to make their own shadows, it’s really effective if you get them to use chalk to draw around the shadow they’ve created. Digital version: You could get them to take photos of their shadows and upload it to the Google Slides. There is also a printable answer sheet where they can record their challenges. These activities will teach your students about animals and their habitats as well as developing their observation, problem solving and inferring skills. The crime scenes are easy to set up with printable props, clue cards, and suspect cards. If you want to add extra elements or real props this can help to bring it alive for the children even further! Get every student in you class fully engaged with this fun card game. This ‘I Have, Who Has?’ game is a fantastic way to review the key terms and symbols for your electricity unit. I have used it very successfully as a quick starter activity to refresh their minds! This pack includes 28 game cards so should be plenty for a whole class, however children can double up or have two cards depending on your class size. Vocabulary Included: - conductor - circuit - insulator - symbol - electricity - component - voltage - amps - battery - wire - switch - series circuit - parallel circuit - circuit diagram - fuse - voltmeter - current Symbols Included: - bulb - open switch - battery - wire - motor - buzzer - closed switch - voltmeter - resistor - fuse - ammeter How to play: Distribute the cards to your students. Some students may get more than one card. Select a student to begin by reading their card aloud. (example: I have the bulb symbol. Who has who has the symbol for a buzzer?) The student who has the card with the correct answer to the previous student’s “Who Has...” question reads their card aloud. And so on. Students must listen for their turn and try not to break the chain. When the chain circles around to the first student, the game is over. If playing individually or in small groups, these cards can also be used as dominoes. This Science (Keeping Healthy) QR code activity is perfect for introducing the topic of ‘Keeping Healthy’ or as a friendly reminder about how to live a healthy lifestyle. You will be amazed at how much they can learn about keeping healthy in a short amount of time! This activity works best in the outdoors. Hide the QR codes around your outdoor area and then give the children the answer sheet and the I-pads. They must go around, find the answers, and complete the answer sheet. If you are using the QR codes, you will need a QR scanner, which you can download free from the app store. Alternatively you can print the cards two sided (with the answers on the back) if you do not have the technology available. I find it works really well if you get the children to do the QR quiz, and then a week later give them the same questions to see what they have remembered. Grab the magnifying glasses, binoculars, and pond nets to explore the habitats in your school grounds / outdoor space. Your class will see how many different habitats they can spot and which animals are lurking there. In pairs, get your class to walk around to see how many different habitats they can spot. They should fill in the differentiated record sheets as they go. For each habitat that your students identify they can use the available equipment to find and record any animals that might be living there. Some students may find it easier to draw pictures of the animals that they find. This activity looks closely at how different skeletons are made up, encouraging children to think about how different animals are able to move in different ways depending on their skeleton. This activity works best in groups. Give each child an animal card and ask them to create the animals skeleton using sticks, thinking carefully about how the animal moves. Once they have done this and you have allowed for sufficient discussion both with each other and an adult, give them the animals skeleton card and let them see how they have done. They can then take another animal to try. These 10 outdoor STEM activities are perfect as a stand-alone outdoor team building activity or as a team builder at the start or end of year. This pack contains 10 challenge cards that you can laminate and use time and time again. Each resource is easy to facilitate, with most challenges only needing a selection of natural resources. We recommend you allow at least 20 minutes for each challenge card, however depending on how you want to use them, students could spend hours on just on one challenge. This investigation gets your class to look closely at their shadow, specifically looking at how it changes throughout the day. They will measure the length of their shadow at set time intervals and try to spot patterns in their results before thinking about the reasons behind these patterns. It is a great way to introduce the concept of the earth’s rotation while thinking about how you can use the sun to help tell the time. For this investigation students (in pairs or small groups) will mark a spot with chalk and draw around and measure their shadow at set intervals throughout the day being sure to record their results on the table.
